Lucy Dalgleish, Digital Research Intern in AI, joined us for two months at the end of 2022 to carry out an ‘environmental scan’ for the Library around AI and cultural heritage.

AI and the Library

Lucy interviewed colleagues from across the Library to explore staff understanding of and feelings towards AI in their area of work, as well as to identify where AI work already exists or is underway. She also explored current literature on the topic of AI and libraries, and work taking place elsewhere.

Her final report details:

-What is AI?
-A brief overview of work elsewhere
-NLS understanding of AI
-AI work underway at the NLS
-Challenges
-Recommendations to guide our future activity

We’re grateful to the Centre for Data, Culture and Society (University of Edinburgh) for funding this work, and to colleagues from across the Library for giving up their time for valuable and illuminating interviews.
